A team from the St. Catherine's British Embassy School made it to the novice final of the Durham Schools competition! Tanya Sheehan and Marietta Vavlides managed to gather 10 points in the preliminary rounds breaking in their very first international tournament. Tanya was also the 3rd best novice speaker of the competition.

This is yet another success for St. Catherine's younger speakers, after dominating the International Competition for Young Debaters regional preliminaries in Athens. The school seems quite capable of keeping up its excellent results, which include outstanding displays at the Forensics tournaments and winning finals and Best Speaker trophies at the Deree Invitational tournaments.

The Durham Schools tournament is one of the most prestigious events in the British circuit. The pre-released motion was that This House would reform the Gender Recognition Act to allow all individuals to self-certify their gender and the CA was ex-Durham debater, Colletta Smith, a former EUDC Grand Final judge and EUDC semi-finalist and top 10 speaker.

The overall tournament winners were Cheney A (Emily Fernandes and Elizabeth Romanis), while the best speaker on the tab was Matthew Handley (SFX A). For the final tab of the event, click here.

Two of the biggest events on the Greek debating calendar are happening this weekend in Thessaloniki, as both the schools and universities debating circuits will gather for two tournaments taking place in the Mandoulides School and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The Panhellenic Forensics Association Tournament kicks off on Thursday night at Mandoulides. As the largest schools event that has been running for decades, it brings together students from private high schools in Athens and Thessaloniki. It features a World Schools debating tournament, Comic and Dramatic Duet Acting competitions as well as individual events (Impromptu speaking, Group Discussion, Oratory speaking and Oral Interpretation of Literature). Last year, the tournament attracted 400 students from 17 schools. For more information regarding the PFA and the participating schools, click through to our Schools page.

A few kilometers away and in the heart of Thessaloniki, the Aristotle University debating club is hosting their 6th Panhellenic Debating Championships from Friday to Sunday. The event, which was the first debating tournament for University students in the Greek language, attracts students from the Universities of Athens, Patras and Thessaloniki, as well as the National Technical University of Athens and the Athens University of Economics and Business. For more information visit their Facebook page.

Also, if you speak Greek, there's an article featured in the Vima newspaper written by debating alumna Ellie Ismailidou. We'll keep you posted on the results and motions from both tournaments.
